Carolin Schelkle is a German Industrial Designer and Material-Researcher. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Product- and Communication Design from the Free University of Bolzano↗ and a Master of Product Design from écal↗ (Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne).

Her work is led by exploring the life of products and raw materials and driven by curiosity, field studies and cross-disciplinary research. The investigations cover a broad range of typologies, including materials, processes, products, spaces and exhibitions, materialized through extensive experimenting, sampling and prototyping. The research results either in the record of a process itself or in a commercial product, encouraging a deeper understanding of the materials and products that surround us.

Wool Tools

As a continuation of the project The Black Sheep of the Wool Industry, Wool Tools continues the research for at Atelier LUMA↗, Arles together in continuous collaboration with the studio AATB↗.

The project is an ongoing research on local wool and the new technology of robotic felting. An intermediate result of this research was presente in April 2023 in the context of the Salone del Mobile in Milan at ALCOVA↗. A pavilion constructed out of local wool is showcasing the possibilities of non-woven wool, needle felted with a robotic arm.

The research, its results and various tests are continuously documented on an online platform: www.wool-tools.com↗

The project aims to define new ways of treating wool by investigating further the technique of robotic felting. This novel method of needle felting is possible thanks to the significant junction of software and hardware development. Robotic needle felting facilitates the creation of both aesthetic designs and functional seam connections. The robot moves a motorised felting tool as an end-of-arm application.

The method includes experimenting with a broad range of felted properties by being able to transform various data inputs into felt, as well as adjust the number of needles and their positioning. As a result, needle felting is no longer continuous; it may be custom-placed, and different felting appearances can be blended based on the parameters: colour, texture, layers, transparency.
